Why are Little Tin Co Tins more expensive than some others?
We are an Australian small business producing quality, handcrafted canned seafood. Whilst our tins are more expensive than some found on supermarket shelves, they are comparative in price to other craft cannery brands around the world. The cost of our tins reflect the cost of their production. We source all or seafood in Australia from responsibly managed fisheries and endeavor to hero locally produced, artisanal ingredients. Our tins are also hand packed in South Australia in our small batch cannery. We are committed to these processes, and ensuring a safe, fair and sustainable supply chain for everyone involved. This means our cost of production in inherently higher than industrially produced tin canned seafood.
What is the canning process?
We begin by working with local sustainable fisheries to source premium, in season seafood. From there we team up with chefs, food lovers and food scientists to trial various recipes and techniques that have been passed down over generations - not every recipe is a winner so, this can take a lot of time. When we find a recipe we love, the production process can finally begin. This is done in our small batch cannery in South Australia where our tins are hand packed ensuring every piece is placed with precision and care. Each tin is then sealed one-by-one, locking in the flavours and nutrients. From there they go into a retort where they are sterilised to ensure they remain shelf-stable. Finally the finished product is placed (again by hand), into their box, ready to enjoy.
What is the shelf life of your products and do they require refrigeration?
All our products are marked with a best before date, which is 3 years from the date of manufacture. We recommend our tins are stored at room temperature - once opened, they should be covered, refrigerated and enjoyed within 3 days.
What are the white particles in my Tin of sardines?
Sardines are naturally high in oil, including Omega-3, (which is what makes them so good for you)! If tins are stored in cool conditions, sometimes some of the oil will crystallise and settle on the surface. Fish oil is considered very healthy, so this is nothing to be concerned about – in fact it is a sign of quality.
Where Do You Source your Seafood?
We source all our seafood in Australia from responsibly managed fisheries. You can learn more about our sourcing practices on the product page for each of our tins, or, see where each species comes from here.
Is Your Canola Oil GM Free?
Our supplier sources 100% Australian canola oil made from non-genetically modified canola seeds. It is also free from additives commonly found in imported and prepacked oils.
Are Your Tins BPA Free & Can They be recycled?
Almost all tins worldwide are now BPA free, making it easy for us to source BPA free tins. Our tins are lined with organosol which is necessary to provide a safe barrier between the food and the metal of the tin. Our tins can be recycled, but please clean thoroughly beforehand, remove the lid completely and place it in the tin.
What do you mean by Local, Delicious, Considered?
Local, Delicious, Considered are the 3 core values we stand by. We are committed to ensuring all our seafood is sourced and canned locally in Australia. We work alongside chefs and food lovers to create delicious recipes using fresh ingredients. Finally, when developing our products, we carefully consider each species, the location it is sourced and harvest methods used to ensure ethical sourcing practices.
